A beautiful dress (salsa)
Posted under salsa dressA beautiful dress (salsa)
Today I leave you with a salsa song from Colombia, from the band Guayacan Orquesta, the song title is: a beautiful dress. You can find the translation of the song lyrics to English below the video
The day I die,
I don’t want you to be sad.
I want you to wear a beautiful dress
I dont want you to cry
I want you to be happy
and that all the day you wear a beautiful dress
A nice dress (a nice dress )
one of those very tight (a nice dress)
A nice dress (a nice dress )
one of those very tight (a nice dress)
My people, do not bury me
I prefer you to burn me
and throw my ashes to the Atrato, please
the river is vaporized, then becomes rain
water to the decanter and instantly I am rum
and I want you to wear (a nice dress)
a nice dress (a nice dress)
one of those very tight (a nice dress)
that fits you snugly (a nice dress)
A nice dress (a nice dress )
one of those very tight (a nice dress)
A nice dress (a nice dress )
one of those very tight (a nice dress)
that fits you snugly (a nice dress)
A nice dress (a nice dress)
a nice dress (a nice dress)
one of those very tight (a nice dress)
that fits you snugly (a nice dress)
And seek for a dressmaker that knows how to sew
And seek for a dressmaker that knows how to sew
ohhh ohhh spinner machine
ohhh ohhh to dance with her
ohhh ohhh spinner machine
ohhh ohhh to dance with her
And seek for a dressmaker that knows how to sew
And seek for a dressmaker that knows how to sew
ohhh ohhh spinner machine
ohhh ohhh to dance with her
ohhh ohhh spinner machine
ohhh ohhh to dance with her
ohhh ohhh spinner machine
ohhh ohhh to dance with her
ohhh ohhh spinner machine
ohhh ohhh to dance with her
And seek for a dressmaker that knows how to sew
And seek for a dressmaker that knows how to sew
A nice dress (a nice dress )
one of those very tight (a nice dress)
that fits you snugly (a nice dress)

You may think that salsa is all about how you move in the dance floor and how good your movements look for others, but what you may not have realized is how important is your dress when dancing salsa. People always tend to judge others by the way they look, their appearance, and this happens also in the salsa floor. A salsa club is a place to show the best of your moves as well as the best of yourself, calling the attention of somebody, for example the men you like or the other women. You would not put so much effort on makeup, choosing the correct salsa heels and a beautiful dress if you would not want to call the attention of the other dancers.
So, why not take the decision of spending time choosing your correct dress? I am going to tell you how a dress can make a huge difference in the salsa floor, in a different way. When you go to dance and you are grabbed by a very good dancer, somebody that is stunning, fabulous in the dance floor, and you consider yourself as a normal, average dancer, probably your nerves are increasing because of the huge incredible attention that you are receiving from being dancing with the best dancer of the floor, and in a couple of seconds, when you look around and you see everybody’s faces, your nerves go up and you want to remove the attention of people from your feet, that is the moment when a good salsa dress become important, cause everybody in the dance floor will remove their attention from yourself and will point it to the beautiful dress you are wearing at that moment! So why not take some time to choose the proper dress for salsa?

Cultural influences on salsa dress code
Posted under salsa dress, salsa dresses, salsa fashionCultural influences on salsa dress code
Around the world there are two main tendencies on how people dress for salsa. In one hand, there is the very formal style, influenced by the leaders of Los Angeles style and the New York style salsa which brought to many countries (especially all Europe, and Australia) a very stylish way of dressing, which is much related with the boom of fashion of cities like New York. As salsa was incorporated into the ballroom types of dances, many elements of the ballroom scene were integrated into the salsa scene, especially in the dressing code that we now nowadays. The elegance display by the ballroom dancers where translated into salsa mixing it with the characteristic Latin American touch in which for example, men tend to use open shirts adjusted to the body.
In the other hand, Latin culture, where salsa has the major influence, has included a less complicated dress code for salsa dancers. Along all Latin America, salsa dance places are full of people wearing simple, casual clothes, like jeans and t-shirts. This comes from the culture of Latin America itself. Latin America social condition has made salsa a more popular dance, faraway form the elegant code of the high society and more near to the less affordable economy of the middle and poor classes. Dress code keeps being important, but the emphasis is different and in most places a good combination of colors and clothes that fit according to the person’s body are far more important than the elegance display in the European-United States dance floors.
When you go to dance salsa, remember that the dress code of a person can be highly influenced by their cultural background and this, in fact, make the salsa floor a more exciting and open place where you can learn a lot about others people traditions as well as showing your own culture to the world!

High heels in the past
Posted under Salsa dance shoes, salsa fashionHigh heels in the past
Although heels are widely used nowadays by many women in the salsa scene ,combined with beautiful dresses, these types of shoes have a long history that can be tracked to the middle age, when people, men and women, use to wear an accessory called pattens, or wooden soles, which was used together with very expensive and fragile shoes to keep them out of the mood. Around the 16th century, the introduction of high heels as fashion is attributed to Catherine of Medici in Paris, who designs them due to her short stature, and suddenly popularized it among the high society.
After the introduction of the heels by Catherine of Medici, the heels became very common among men and women, with the king of France, in the early 1700s, Louis XIV (the sun king), becoming a reference point for this type of shoes among the people of that century. As the heels provided more elegance and sculpted the body of woman to make it appear more aristocratic and desirable, many people opposed to their use claiming that the woman’s who use to wear them were witches.
During the French revolution, high heels were associated with the opulence and were suddenly eliminated from the markets for both men and woman. After this period heels became much shorter than they were and it wasn’t until the middle of the 19th century when heels became popular again together with the developing of the sewing machine which gave a great impulse to the creation of a wide variety of heels.
We are very lucky to today for having such a great invention for dancing any type of music and specially salsa. A good couple of shoes together with a beautiful dress can make a huge difference in the dance scene!

Most of us know that the painful that can be using the wrong heels for dancing, you do not want to just look fantastic on those shoes but more important feel comfortable and be able to enjoy a long night of salsa. So here are some tips for you in order to choose the correct heels for a splendid night.
First try to not choose heels that cause your toes overlap with the front of the shoe leaving your fingers in the floor. The very good ones should include straps that truly fit into your foot. You can try them before buying them! Just slide your foot into the shoe and if your toes touch the floor the shoe is too wide for you. You should also take care in case your feet tend to swell, which can get worse if the shoes are too tight, in which the best option for you is to choose slightly loose to begin.
Open shoes has the advantage of receiving a continuous air flow for your feet which should keep it fresh and cool all the times but, of course, close shoes are always a good idea in case your partner tend to step in the wrong place all the time!, and don’t forget the winter! A good couple of close shoes are always a good investment.
In respect to the bottom of the shoe, it has to provide ease sliding and soft and comfortable turnings, the better it slides the easiest for you to turn and move around the dance floor. Leather is always a good choice because of its versatility, they can adjust and shape to your feet to make it more comfortable, and they are ideal for those wooden floors that are so common around the salsa and ballroom scene.
Finally, shoes with closed-in backs can give more security to your feet than the ones with open-back styles. Remember, when choosing salsa heels, the most important aspect is not their (and your) beauty but their functionality.
